iPhone model number, country code & country of origin – how to check

What’s an iPhone’s model number & part number?

What’s an iPhone’s model number?

An iPhone’s model number is a string of letters, digits, or characters that designates the specs and market for the device.

What’s an iPhone’s part number?

The part number for an iPhone is a string of letters, digits, or characters that specifies its color, storage capacity, and country of distribution. It’s safe to say that an iPhone’s part number is simply a more detailed model number.

2) Check the sim tray slot

You can also find an iPhone’s model number by checking the sim tray slot as shown in the image below.

Remove the sim tray and look at the top side of the sim tray slot. The model number written there is very tiny so you need a very bright overhead light and perhaps a lens.

3) Check on the iPhone’s box

If the iPhone is not yet unboxed, you can check its model number and part number by looking at the backside of its box.

4) Check on the iPhone’s back

What’s an iPhone’s country code?

An iPhone’s Country Code is a letter or set of letters contained in the iPhone’s Part Number that indicates the country from which it originates.

Which section of the iPhone part number represents its country of origin?

If we consider the Japan iPhone 13 Pro 128 GB Graphite (its model number is A2636), it has the Part Number MLUE3J/A. The last letter just before the “/” (forward slash symbol) is the letter “J”. That’s what identifies the iPhone as originating from Japan. In other words, the letter “J” is the iPhone’s country code.

Likewise, the Canadian iPhone 13 Pro 128 GB Graphite has the same model number A2636 but its Part Number is MLUE3VC/A. In this case, the last letter before the “/” (forward slash symbol) is the letter “C”. Therefore “C” is its country code.

For iPhones from certain countries, the country code could be the last two letters before the “/” in the part number. For example, the US iPhone 13 Pro 128 GB Graphite has the model number A2483 and Part Number MLTP3LL/A. And its country code is “LL“.

The iPhone 13 country versions – a recommended video!

What’s an iPhone’s country of origin?

An iPhone’s country of origin is the region where Apple specifically designed that iPhone model to operate effectively with carriers, and government regulations.

After manufacturing, iPhones are shipped to and sold primarily in their designated countries or regions. However, it is not uncommon to find iPhones that were intended for one regional market end up in another.

Why does an iPhone’s country of origin matter?

It’s important to know the country of origin of an iPhone because different country models may have unique specifications, compatible cellular bands, and government regulations by which they abide, and therefore may not be convenient for someone in a different country.

Where are iPhones made?

Apple designs and develops the iPhone exclusively in California, meanwhile, Foxconn whose largest assembly plant is located in China, is Apple’s main assembler of the iPhone. Hence the phrase: “Designed in California, assembled in China”.

Apple

Furthermore, Apple outsources the manufacture of various parts of the iPhone to several different companies around the world. The finished parts are then shipped to Foxconn for assembly. So from design, to manufacture, to assembly, the iPhone is handled by multiple companies in several countries simultaneously. Therefore it’s safe to say that the iPhone is not made in a single country.
